I have an 06 Mini Cooper S and just recently noticed a rattle in the engine when I am outside the vehicle. You can't hear it when inside, and it goes away when the clutch is engaged. I took it to the dealership in Fife, had them listen, and the quick response was that this is typical with the S model. It has to do with the springs and the flywheel, and how because the car is tuned for performance, there tends to be some allowance for vibrations like that.
Does this sound familiar to anyone else? Anyone else experiencing a rattle or vibration in the engine? Thanks ahead of time for the help!

I'm dreaming of a new throw-out bearing, although that would be QUITE premature.
Does this describe your situation ? http://carcare.org/Manual_Transmission/throw-out_bearing.shtml

The sound in my engine is more of a vibration/rattle, not a whirring or growling as described in that article. Also, the sound stops when the clutch is pressed in, starts up again when released, the opposite of what occurs with a worn throw-out bearing. The thought had crossed my mind, but does seem really soon to be having any issues with my transmission/clutch system. Thanks for the help, though! Hope someone else out there has dealt with this...

This has come up before with the 06's. Just will take some time to remember were.

Red Dwarf just had the same thing. I still haven't found it yet but I think there is something about the flywheel depending on your build date?
http://www.psmini.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4282 May have to head over to NAM to find it. John |

I have the same sound... I was in for a service about 2 months ago now, and Bert said that is was a normal flywheel sound. Goes away when the clutch is in. You can hear it when the car is in nuetral and the clutch is out. Bert said to monitor it, and if it gets worse bring it back, but he said it was a normal sound... I am out of warranty the end of March, so I may bring it back before then... My car is an 05...

I've got an 07 MCS and noticed the same sound appearing a few weeks ago. I'm just a few hundred miles away from being out of warranty, and have an appointment to get it looked at with a couple other issues next Tuesday.
