As it gets closer, the passes to watch in the traffic reports are Snoqualmie, Meachum, Dead Man's Pass, and hwy 93 from Jackpot to Ely.  Although 93 does not go through any real passes it does have spots of 5000 to 6000 ft elevation.  Last pass is on hwy 6 just south of Ely, NV.  We usually see snow on the side of the road here.  Even if it snows at night, it is usually gone by the time we get there.  Some of the 1-day trippers have had some issues here.

Links to the traffic conditions:

http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/passes/snoqualmie/default.aspx

http://www.tripcheck.com/Pages/RCMap.asp?mainNav=RoadConditions&curRegion=3

http://safetravelusa.com/nv/

you have to click on the highway itself to get the report in NV.  This is nice in the fact that it shows the CA roads near Lake Tahoe too.

Hopefully, we get a warming trend by late March and everything will be open and clear.   I really do not want to travel I-5 thru CA.

How many do we have confirmed for the drive down to Vegas on Tuesday (total including McDonalds and the North Bend stop)?  Alan - you may want to update at the very top of this post so people won't have to scroll through the entire post for those that are curious on the current count (like me).

Any chance that the Portland MINI club would be interested in meeting us somewhere along the way?  I can try contacting them and ask...  What do you think?

Try emailing vicepresident@pdxmini.org and asking if they have any plans.

I’m set and ready to go.  I got my walkie-talkie, my reservation in Jackpot on the 24th, and my Airstream RV in Vegas for the 25th - 30th.

I can’t wait.   Dont forget to add me in your list.

I mentioned this earlier and Peabody agreed that we should consider leaving by 7:00 am from Norht Bend instead of gathering at 7:30am. It is a long first day and we lose an hour in time zone changes. We arrived at Jackpot about 8pm last year.

They do have a Prime Rib dinner for it is either $6 or $8 that will be served on Tues night. Any body have any great objections or other input??

Can we work with the 1/2 an hour?  For some of us it is still an hour drive to North Bend.  We will just drive faster???
This is also coming from someone that is NOT a morning person.

as it is now I have to get up at 5:30 to be at North Bend by 7:30 aaaahhhh

I think 7:30 is fine- it is only a half an hour and everyone needs to remember that we are LEAVING North Bend at 7:30 so if you want coffee or breakfast then you need to get to North Bend in time to get what you need to leave at 7:30

Ok off my soap box and this again is just Dori's .02 I will do whatever everyone else wants to do only my co-pilot has to deal with me being cranky till about noon!

I’m flexible, but I am in favor of the 7AM start time.

I guess i am flexable, but we all agreed and better to be rested and ready. I am always up for Prime Rib and we can make time by minding our stops and keeping a good pace. Plus the wife is already kicking about the start time, I am a morning person... she isn't

Brenda you might want to check google map or one of the others, I thought I-5 south and over would be shorter from south Tacoma but it is not. Not sure where your start is so it might be shorter for you.

I understand the "not morning people" that is why I always get the first turn in the morning. The 7:30 firm departure time works for me. And I agree that we can make sure our stops don't drone on but we were pretty good about that last year and with the time change still arrived at about 8pm since it is 11 plus hours.

I'm a team player and since my copilot will probabley be asleep (the Tom Tom will be awake along with the stereo), I don't have to deal with the cranky aspects. Wink

7:30am it is.   I'm an early riser, but I'm sticking with the team.   I'm also in no hurry to get to Jackpot.  For me part of the fun is getting there because I enjoy every ones company.  But if you all want to get there under 11 hours then that's fine with me as well.   Yeah I’m pumped and ready to rock and roll… sorry I’m a newbie.

So how many drivers do we have?

I think I know one reason you're all "pumped".  You're aching to try out all the new performance mods that you just had installed for your MINI yesterday aren't you?  LOL Wink

Dori,

I think Larry (JOIDVIE) is going to join us as well.  At least that's what he indicated at the Little Creek Casino run.

Is this kinda the route you had in mind (at least the part from North Bend to the Oregon border)?  Here's a link to view how the drive looks from our place:  http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1a=14500+Kapowsin+Hwy.+E.&1z=98338&2c=Twin+Falls&2s=ID

Estimated time for us starting from our home in Kapowsin, WA to Twin Falls, ID:  10 hours 14 minutes Estimated Distance: 656.66 miles   (I presume this is calculated with no stops)

We heard from Brian Cone of the Portland Club - here's his message for the planners:

Subject: Attending AMVIV

Hello Jack & Linda,

I have signed up to attend AMVIV again this year and will encourage other Portland Mini Club members to attend.  Can we meet you at the same rest stop as last year on I-84 on March 24th?  That worked out great last year.  Please let your friends know that I plan to meet up with you again.  Looking forward to seeing you!  Hopefully I’ll avoid the tumbleweed tornado this time!

For those not familiar with the route, We take I-82 down to Oregon and then head West on I-84.  Just a couple of miles past this intersection there is a large rest stop where we met up with Brian last year.

For those of you coming from the south end, this might be an option for you.  A couple of years ago someone (I think it was GoMiniGo) calculated which was shorter going I90 to I-82 and then I-84 or going I-5 to I-84 and figured that for anyone starting south of Puyallup the I-5 drive was shorter.  For those North of Puyallup the I-90 route was better.

If anyone wants to take the "Southern Route" this rest stop would be the perfect place to meet up with the rest of the group.

A 7:30 am time is okay with us.  Mavourneen is NOT a morning person, and I am, so I get to drive first, which is good since I will be pumped.  We plan to get to North Bend a little early so we can fuel up and get a (gaaasp!) Egg McMuffin.

Lets try to leave North Bend as close to 7:30 as possible so we don't have to SPEED through Ontario, Oregon, which is a proven (by me) speed trap.

I'll be joining this group down, just have to deside if I am going to stay somewhere in the north bend area monday night, or leave Bremerton on the 4:50am ferry.

Been thinking a LOT about this trip...  Since at least part of it is gonna be on my own (I-5 South to WA-14 thru the Gorge and then TBD) out of cell phone--and therefore AAA--range, I decided to add a spare tire to my load (for those who are new or didn't yet notice, the S is sans spare).  I've only had two flats in 10 years and both on my truck, but the last one tore a chunk out of the sidewall and there's not enough tire goop on the planet to allow you to get anywhere when that happens.

The eBay price seems to be between $120 and $160 plus $35 shipping, so I tried partrequest.com and had an offer to sell me one within 12 hours for $104.  It's on it's way using my FedEx Ground account, so I'm figuring total to be about $130.

By the way, for those who haven't heard, if you have a flat on a MINI front tire and need the spare, put the spare on the rear and the regular tire from the rear on the front.  This is the best way for all front wheel drive cars.

According to the tripcheck site this morning, there are currently 63 miles of "Minimum Chain Restriction: Carry chains or traction tires regardless of conditions" on I-84 in Oregon.  Sure hope it clears up in next five weeks!

John (GoKart) - How coincidental that you post about purchasing a spare tire.  Steve and I were just talking about that last night.  I told him that I should look into purchasing a spare.  However, my hubby reminded me that I have 4 "spares" mounted and balanced on my stock rims (my winter runflat tires).  Do you think that would be too big to cart with us to Vegas?  Just how small is the spare tire that you've purchased?  -Brenda

Standard MINI spare.  I, too, thought of using one of my other mounted tires, but it's TOO BIG AND HEAVY... though you have more space inside the car than I do Wink

I guess we'll just lug around the stock tire/wheel just in case we happen to trash a wheel.  I know of three MINI owners who've had to replace the tire and wheel from hitting potholes.  I don't want to be stuck waiting for a replacement wheel.  Not fun...

The clubman actually has spare tire well under the floor of the boot. I'm looking for a doughnut spare for Anne's clubman. Where did you find yours John? Does it have to be a "MINI" OEM spare or will a standard doughnut with the correct lug patter and diameter work?
