 Topic: Auxilary Input Mounting Alternative

 On Saturday we stopped by NW Mini and picked up an auxilary input jack to mount in our Mini for our MP3 player. We had been using a FM Modulator and we were getting tired of the lousy sound quality and station hopping problems. After reading the article in MC2 about installing I went ahead with it but I didn't like the unfinished look of just letting the plug hang out under the console. Rather than mount it in the glove box as the factory part instructions show I found a nice and simple place to mount it under the console stack where MC2 article just left it hanging. Now we don't have to open the glove box and move stuff around to get to it and it's easy to just reach under the center console and plug it in and there are less wires hanging around. Anyway, thought someone might find this alternative location ideal like I did.

Glad you discovered that more elegant solution - we've had ours there since the initial install. Did you pull the plastic piece out or do the install "in place"?

That was my first choice for installation location, too. Nice, clean look. Out of the way. Hopefully you don't encounter the ground loop issue I had, where the aux port would suddenly cut out, and would only come back when the I would unplug the Sirius from the port. Soon as I put in the ground loop isolator, I've had no problems, and I haven't noticed a loss in sound quality. The ground loop isolator costs ~$20 at Radio Shack.

I had the same problem with the Nuvi cutting out - got a Ground Loop Isolator from Crutchfield - a little smaller than the Radio Shack and takes a mini plug directly without a "Y" fitting. (note - this is only required if you are using "car" power for your aux device - if you are running off internal batteries you will not have the cutout problem)

I popped the panel out partially to get at it...didn't totally need to remove it. Thanks for the headsup on the "Groud Loop Isolator". I'll keep that in mind (wouldn't have had a clue about that potential problem).

I have never had a problem with using the Aux Port and using Car Power for my Aux Port. I have heard of lots people having the problem but I have never encountered it.

I'm not lost  - but I have had the problem with the Nuvi. It works fine for 10 - 20 minutes and then just stops. Really weird the first time it happens. I suppose it may have something to do with the device you are powering - and which way the wind was blowing when they built your car....
