I have a 2004 S, with 45,000 miles on...when should I be replacing the pads?

That's pretty good mileage for a set of pads. You can take off you wheel and peak in there and see how much pad is left. Probably pretty close to the backing plate by now. the brakes do have a wear sensor that will get tripped when they get down to replacement time. It will illuminate a light on the instrument display.

And if you want to change them yourself, it's not overly hard to do.

True...I swap them out in 30 minutes front & rear now. Sure saves bucks.

I’ve nearing 45,000 on my original brakes, and I’ve got about 40% left on the front and 60% on the back. |

I just did Jessmini's brakes yesterday. There was still a little bit of braking stuff on the backing plate but not very much <1/8 inch). She only had 25,000 miles on the car. BTW, the earlier cars (ours are both 2003's) don't have pad wear sensor so a visual inspection is a must.

Mine were just replaced (front and back though I was surprised that the backs also needed to be replaced) at just over 37k. Seemed way early for BOTH sets but it happened.

That's not abnormally low but it does really depend on your driving style, but replacing with a non-OEM pad might help them last longer. The OEM pads wear pretty quick and leave a lot of dust. |
