Hello Friends,

I have decided to by a new Mini Cooper S 4-door Hardtop and sell PYLON.  Mini of Portland is the obvious connection for me but what about NW Mini or Mini of Seattle?  Any feedback about the buying experience?

The question is, "When you turn on your car does it return the favor?"

Both washington dealers are great. We have purchased cars and both and been very happy with the sales teams. However, like Rob said, if you are from Oregon you would certainly want to go with the no sales tax option. :)

When you register in Washington they will collect the tax.

Hi Brian!

Oregon Residents are exempt from Washington sales tax on certain purchases, including automobiles:

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=82.08.0264

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=458-20-177

Washington Residents who purchase a car out of state will be charged the normal Washington Sales Tax when they register the car in Washington.

Been a while since we have see you on the forum!  Hope all is well - How is PDX doing?

(For those who don't know Brian, he has joined in with PSMINI convoys to AMVIV and MITM several times)

On this issue I have personal experience... If you buy a car from MINI of Portland it will be handled exactly like a purchase from one of the two Washington State dealers.  The exception occurs in the finance office as the paper work is being completed.  If the driver's license that you provide (required) shows a Washington address, the software will automatically throw in the appropriate amount of tax for the city/county in which you reside.  You are sent on you way with a temporary paper plate.  When the sale is validated with the lending organization, MINI of Portland will send the appropriate documents to the license office of your choice and will send you a check for the amount of the tax that was computed and included on your sales contract.   Contact the license office to see if they have received the documentation.  If so, take the check to them and they will register your car in Washington State and issue your permanent plates.  This sounds real wordy but it isn't much more difficult than a local purchase.  The bonus is that you can provide a tax free shopping spree in the City of Roses for your special friend to ease the guilt of getting a sweet new ride!  Buying a car without a trade in?  Take the train down and your sales advisor will pick you and take you to the dealer.

In Brian's case, he is an Oregon resident maybe thinking of buying a car in Washington...

You will not get any "assistance" with tax issues if you buy from a private party out of state and you will be charged Washington sales tax when you register the car.
