My Toyo T1Rs were down to the wear bars (about 22K miles) so I started shopping around for tires.  Les Schwab (I love the service those guys provide, but can't justify the cost considering I rotate my own tires) quoted me almost $900 for a set of Proxes 4 (mount, balance, inspect and recertify the pressure sensors), but Edge Racing (NAM Sponsor) quoted me around $950 for new Enkei RS7 wheels and Toyo Proxes 4 in 215 40, including shipping, aluminum centering rings (vs the free plastic ones which melt at the track) and lug nuts.  Forgetting previous experiences in my excitement over the new wheels, I signed up.

The tires arrived today, and wouldn't you know it, my previous experience won out, and I have a set of beautiful wheels and tires with all of the wheel weights firmly stuck to the cardboard packaging after they fell off the wheels during shipping (where's the racing tape I requested???).

Sigh.

Off to Schwab tomorrow, tail between legs for $ worth of balancing.

Live and learn.  I ain't even spending the time emailing/calling Edge, as I don't expect anything different from last time, which was ultimately no response.

I guess the good thing is the weights came off the wheels BEFORE you got on the track...  Still, something that shouldn't have happened.

Jack...

You are absolutely right.

Martin - I just don't think they have acetone or some other solvent to wipe the mounting area before applying the stick on weights.  Have you ever tried to remove weights that were properly applied?  Woah - what a mess.

If you're close enough to Kirkland, I can recommend this outfit - http://www.ftlperformance.com/

It's a couple of guys who autocross and acquired the tire mounting & balancing equipment to feed their habit.  I've been thru 4 sets of Toyo T-1S's and one set of T-1R's.  (Both types are great tires for a Miata btw).

I also got tired of paying the premium that LS charges for Toyo's and ordered the last two sets over the web and had FTL do the mounting and balancing.

The T-1R's lasted some 20+ months (sorry, 'haven't yet remembered to tally up the exact performance stats), so it's been awhile since I last dealt with Russ, but I definitely plan on returning when the times comes for CARMEN to get new rubber.  She turned 3,000 miles this week.  She also got her vanity license plates installed last night btw.

I ordered my tires and wheels from Edge and had no trouble with them... but that was a couple of years ago so maybe things have changed there.

Unfortunately, UPS can be ruff with packages at times and things like this do happen once in a blue moon.  Just give me a call and I'll let you know what will be done to take care of this situation for you.

That is the same story for these guys   www.tightntidyracing.com  in Renton.    I have used the services of both, they are both excellent.  Use the one that is closer to you.

The FTL guys are actually track day regulars.  Tight-n-Tidy are autocrossers.

Hi, Leo!

I will respond to you directly, but also here as I am very pleasantly surprised to hear from you without me even making the attempt yet.  I do really appreciate your response, as the first set of tires I ordered from you had the same problem (which is why I requested the aluminum racers tape this time around).  I called several times and got voicemail back then, and also emailed - all with no response.  I was pretty disappointed, as you can imagine.

I got the wheels balanced today - cost about $25, which is no big deal.  My whine related to the extra effort to get the problem fixed here locally.

For PS Mini folks, Leo followed up for a couple of days about lug nuts, as there was some question about what I told the order taker.  He promised to send some that match my TSW studs (14 x 1.50), and yesterday, I got notice that they were on the way.

Leo, I am pleasantly surprised  to hear from you after my first go-around.  I went back to you because I keep reading good reviews about your company on NAM, and figure my first experience was an anomaly.  Now I know.  Thank you very much.

Knowing that UPS etc is pretty rough on shipping, is there something you can do in the future to make sure the wheel weights stay attached (aluminum racers tape?).

Thanks again for responding.

Pat

Pat,

We are definitely doing our best to make sure that the wheel weights stay on the wheels properly during shipping, but sometimes there are other factors out of our control that cause this to happen.  The finish on the wheels, the clearcoat finish, the matt finish, ect.... sometimes causes the weights not to stick on properly.  These types of cases are very uncommon and for you to have two bad experiences is very unlikely, but it happens and that is why we do our best to take care of you when anything out of the ordinary occurs.  We are definitely looking into better ways to maintain the weights secure onto the wheels so we can eliminate these types of problems for us and more importantly, you guys.  I'll be looking forward to the fax that I spoke to you about in my e-mail so we can get those charges refunded back to your card.  Let me know if you need anything else.

These are GREAT wheels!  The finish is very nice.  The whole package is light.  The only problem I will have with these wheels is that you can see everything.  I'll be keeping my calipers, springs, hubs, etc, etc clean.  That's OK tho.

I was out at the track for a bit this morning, and went out to one of the turnstations to fix a problem.  As usual, when I have the whole track to myself, I play a bit.  Tho these are all season tires with full tread, I REALLY like them.

I would recommend them to you.

I'm not sure what road balanced is Scott.  The Schwab guys know me and my driving habits.  They rebuilt one set of tire pressure monitors with steel valve stems, and will rebuild my second set the same way.  They also use aluminum tape over the weights (tape on only) so I won't be losing weights at the track.

Whatever they did seems to work OK at over 115mph (I wasn't wearing a helmet, so didn't push thru the corners on new tires).

So - road balanced?

Some LS stores have the Hunter road balance machine.  Here is a link (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=40) to how it works.

Ah yes - this Schwab does have the Hunter equipment.  One of the reasons I go to this one.  I have had some issues with scratches or clamp on weights at other nearby stores.
