Get Involved! - FOPIR +
SOLV
FOPIR is sponsoring the SOLV clean up of the Kenton
neighborhood in north Portland on the morning of April 28 from 9:00 am to 1:00
pm. We need all the volunteers we can get to help pick up trash
and clean up the Kenton Firehouse yard. This is your chance as a FOPIR member
to make a meaningful contribution to the community and score points with our
neighbors to the south of the track. Join literally tens of thousands of
other volunteers working on similar projects throughout the state of Oregon on
Earth Day. We will meet at the the historic Kenton Firehouse on 8105 N.
Brandon St., near Kenton Park. If you have one, bring your pick up. There
should be ample street parking. Dress in layers. Some find work gloves helpful,
but SOLV provides thin gloves. There will be areas that need special attention
that get assigned the morning of the event.
Get more information and register on line under
Portland - Kenton + Friends of PIR at: http://www.solv.org/programs/solv_it.asp#sitelist.
Walk ons are welcome. If you have questions, please contact
Gary Bockman or Verne Naito. This is
the single most important thing FOPIR will do this year to improve relations
within the community. Your presence will make a big difference even if you can
only come for an hour or
two.

Fast, fun
bike racing for everyone starts up again at
PIR
Bicycle racing in Oregon is
on the rise and the numbers are growing each year. The Oregon Bicycle Racing
Association has hit record membership level of over 3,000 racers competing in
various events throughout the state.
Here in Portland, we are lucky
enough to have a great venue to race bikes on at PIR. It is a luxury to have
access to a track like this and so close to the city. There are 2 great
options to try out bike road bike racing on Monday and Tuesday nights. Come
check it out!
Lakeside Bicycles Monday Night Masters and Women
Series May 7- August 27 (no racing June 4th)
Races are divided into separate
categories of novice masters men (aged 30+), novice women, 2 categories for more
experienced masters men and an open women category for women of any age
including juniors. There are even experienced racers standing by to provide
guidance and answer questions if you need help. All that's required is a helmet,
a road bike and a sense of adventure.
Racing starts at 6:15pm. Entry fee
is only $13 for women and masters men, $5 for women under 18. Racers who avoid
traffic on I-5 by bike commuting, carpooling or taking MAX to PIR receive $1 off
entry and race organizers will donate $1 to the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, the local non-profit organization
working to making Oregon one of the best places in the world to ride a
bike.

Hot Rod and Custom Show Attracts New Members
Thanks to the efforts of
volunteers Win Casey, Donna Adams, Julie Winslow, Terry McBride, Don Roberts,
Pete and Cindy Macias, Mike Volk, Chris Heinrich, Michelle Swanson, and Jeff
Zurschmeide, FOPIR recruited over 150 new members. Many, many more learned
about PIR and FOPIR's mission by stopping by the FOPIR booth. FOPIR was well
represented at this event by FOPIR members who volunteered to recruit new
members and spread the word. Special thanks to Pete Macias who got FOPIR into
the show and organized the volunteer effort on short notice.
FOPIR also thanks Eric Purcell of Earthbound Flying Machines
for transporting the display cars and to the following FOPIR members for lending
their cars for the exhibit: Mark Canty, Greg Rollin, Sydney Schiffman and
family, Charlie Tiller and family, PIR for the truck, and Jason
Wilson.
If you know of upcoming motorsport enthusiast events, let us
know. Better still, volunteer to sign up new members at that event. FOPIR is
an easy sell. We're doing great things...preserving and enhancing one the
region's truly great
assets.

Cool Fuel On
Track!
Bill Isbister founded Club
Biodiesel in 2001, and now calls his project Cool Planet Racing. "We have the
potential to stage a truly unique event at PIR. I'm calling it Cool
Fuel On Track," Isbister says.
Isbister organized the first
biodiesel-fueled "Clean Air 1/4 Mile" at PIR in April of 2002 with Ken Rakoz
from Centralia College. "What I want to do now is put together a clean
fuel/tech expo that would include all the latest thinking in renewables. The
event would be all inclusive, featuring biofuels, electric, H2, human power and
whatever new tech is evolving. What sets this apart is that it won't be just a
static display of vehicles. People would be able to see and sample the latest
thinking on track at PIR," Isbister says.
Isbister plans to invite all
auto manufacturers to the event. "This could be where America's big three show
that they're still in the game. With the right marketing, this event could
garner global attention. Cool Fuel On Track would also put PIR in a very
positive light. And put cash into the area economy," he says.
Isbister
welcomes comments and suggestions from FOPIR members.
