Topic: CV Joint? Sticky Pads? Posted: October/05/06 at 3:01pm |
Help As of this morning I picked up a new noise in the front driverside wheel. It started small but has gotten much louder. The screaching/grinding noise occurs when I am taking off from a light or just about anywhere. At this time, if I turn the wheel just a little to the right the noise comes on stronger and stronger. I was at the track on Monday and my pads are now less than 1/2 left. Has anyone had bad noise when their pads get below 50%?...Or can anyone give me a reason that it would be the CV joint? NW Mini replaced the boot and all earlier this year and I can't imagine it being that...But then again, I'm not 100% on them either. (how does a cv boot go bad just as you ARRIVE at the dealership???) tell me how that works?
If anyone has had this problem and can possibly help I'd GREATLY APPRECIATE IT! (I don't have a warranty) Edited by YakiMini - October/05/06 at 4:04pm |

You might want to pop the front wheels off and see if a rock or something got lodged between the caliper carrier and the rotor. While you're in there, check the thickness of the pad on the back side of the rotor. It's not unheard of that one pad will wear more than another. The pads can even wear unevenly top to bottom or side to side...
You can even double check the boots while you're in there. |

I started to use process of elimination on the noise and it has to be the brakes. I just have not had time to pull the wheel off yet. Hmm, it's getting close to that time again. Researching for some new and better brake pads than what I have. (Mintex Red Box)

My brakes get significantly noisier after just one day at the track and I found
that the inside pad was more worn than the outside one you can easily see. I'm hoping someone on here will recommend pads that are more suited to track days. I have some Cooper S pads for sale, and I need JCW recommendations. |

I was looking at some NICE pads at Mini-Madness but can't justify $150-$200 for a good set. Thanks for the comment, it sounds like my problem to.....

Track pads, like a Hawk HP Plus are good track pads but they will eat the dickens out of your rotors. Just fine is you want to swap them out at the track (both to and from) but don't wear them any more than necessary. If you have JCW floating caliper brakes, I'm quite sure there is no other pads made for them... You might want to see is guide bushings will fit those calipers. That would cure the eating of one pad over the other.

I'd check the inside pads (they're hard to see) and make sure they are not
worn out. Also, because of hot sticky tires, it's very common for a car to pick up a rock and flip it in between the shield and the rotor. Most of the time when you hear the screeching/grinding noise you can just back up fast and hit the brakes a few times and it will kick the rock out. But it make have worked it's way in there too far. If I were you, I'd take the wheel off and really look around. If you don't see anything, I'd pull the bolt that allows you to rotate the caliper away from the rotor. It's only one bolt, and you'll be able to really see what's going on in there. Good luck! |
