Topic: RIP - The Knotty Lady Posted: May/03/08 at 11:44am |
It's been a heck of a day for my family today. More drama with my brother and then later this morning I got a call saying my parents boat was burning.
37 foot President - The Knotty Lady
My dad spent the morning working on the thermostat in the rear bedroom. He was gone to Lowes when he got a call saying the boat was burning. After a lot of stress (on his part that he did something wrong and my mom's because she wasn't sure if he was still on the boat) it turns out that the wiring in the light above the rear bed just worked loose over time and shorted. A MAJOR relief for my dad that he didn't do it but still, a huge loss. It's fortunate the fire didn't start when they were under way up on the fly bridge.
Don't know if it is a total loss yet but it sounds like it. All the teak on the inside is black from the smoke and heat, the windows are busted out, and the rear bedroom burned. He hasn't been able to get on board it yet but the fire department was amazed how hot the inside was and how much melted.
It's sad, the boat was just put back int he water this week after getting the zyncs done, bottom painted, etc. We've had some great time on it and were looking forward to another outing soon.

Sorry to here that.
Yes fires on board Fiberglass boat burn very hot and they are very hard to put out if it gets into the hull. Fiberglass burns like a petroleum product that is why it is so hot. Once in the hull it usually burns to the water line. I take it this was the 110 shore side powered light or was it the 12/24 volt ship side. From my experience normally this kind of problem trips the breaker before it gets to the causing a fire but it is not uncommon. Can be a real danger when taking on fuel and you have that shorting out, thus way they want you to shut down at the fuel dock for gas engines. I hope it is fully covered by insurance. This my sound bad but hope that it is a total loss. The heat from large fires on board fiberglass boats crystallizes the resins and down the road you will have nothing but trouble with here. Nice looking boat, what a 32-36 footer, Tolley Craft? doesn't look like a Uni-Flight and does she have twins? Once again sorry to here the lose but I am glad no one was on board and got hurt. |

Todd,
I also wanted to say, if it isn't totaled and your Dad needs an estimate on repairing her let me know. I work for a guy who owns a full service ship yard in Port Angeles called Platypus Marine. I know they have done repairs on burned out boats before. Best of luck! Nicole Edited by SELENE - May/03/08 at 2:23pm |

Thank you all.
John - It's actually a 1989 (or 1987, can't recall the year) President. Here is a link to a similar one (http://www.westwindyachtscanada.com/p37366a.htm). She has twin Cat diesels. My dad's gut is she is a total loss. The fire started above the aft cabin island bed (you can see it in the pictures). I am sure between the teak and the hull she had plenty to burn.
Selene - I will let him know.

Like everyone's already said, I'm so, so, sorry, but at least no one was hurt and they weren't underway somewhere.

Humm, Cats that would have made her nice and quiet. I take it she had a small gen pack like a Norther Star or Orion too.
Don't know much about your Dad's gut feelings, but given that it probably burned for 15 to 20 mins at least before the fire department showed up he is probably right. Just wonder where does he normally moar at? John John |

They live in Shelter Bay in LaConner and keep it there. I talked to them today, the interior was hot enough to mel their television which was 15 feet from the fire in another room. |

Just got the call, the boat is a total loss. It's sad as she was a beautiful boat. The quotes to replace the teak alone were near $100k nearing the replacement cost for the boat as a whole.
They are now searching for a boat with a pilot house.
