So I saw this in the middle of my instrument cluster the other day:
...and I had to look it up in the manual. "Bulb of exterior lighting system failed."
Of course I checked what I thought was every single lamp on the outside before remembering the license plate lamps. I did think it odd that both bulbs went dead. Maybe the indicator doesn't come on when only one lamp fails. I found that both bulbs had a metal end cap on one end that worked its way loose from the glass. Both lamps came out in pieces.
It looks like the lens covers can come off without removing the license plate bracket but I took it off anyway to clean behind it.
I didn't know that the hatch door is tagged with the VIN!
I also didn't know that I scuffed the finish in two places beneath the lower license plate screw mounts. The car came with two screws at the top of the bracket. I like the cleaner look of a plate mounted with four screws. I found two screws of similar size and ran 'em in there. It appeared that the mount holes were threaded socket wells. That illusion is created by the presence of tiny foam pads on the back of the plate mount that cover the "through and through" threads. You can see one of those tiny pads in the photo above that was twisted away when I ran that slightly oversize screw in there.
My exterior lamps are all in good working order again. I'm happy that my first non-warranty repair was something as simple as this.
I offer two tidbits of possibly valuable information:

I thought the screws were metric sized. Maybe that's only on the first generation cars.

I was surprised as well. I put a metric pitch gauge to it first and it didn't line up.
