One of our friends mentioned the other day seeing everyone that was coming up from the south end.  Here's what she had to say:

Quote
I thought of you guys when I went to work Saturday.  There was a caravan of about 15 minis on the freeway next to me...it was cool. =)

So you were noticed,a nd brought a smile to someone face.  :)

I'm not sure that the DOT rating is quite high enough on that helmet for racing purposes, though.  ;)

A big THANK YOU to PS Mini for the outstanding participation in the Tulip Rally. You guys really helped bust the record attendence for this year. Sounds like you all had as much fun running it as we did putting the thing on. See you next year???   Kevin Cobley MGCCNWC

Given the fun we had this year (first rally ever), I think it's safe to say we'll be back next year.  :)

Ratbagsmg (or do you prefer Kevin?)

Is there any way we can get a copy of the Tulip Rally route?  The roads would be wonderful for a motor.  You guys rock!

Thanks,

Ina

I'm not Kevin and he may have a better answer or suggestion, but he was nice enough to send me a copy of the Rallye instructions & questions.  I'll be happy to scan & post them somewhere if someone just tells me where or if you give me a day, I can re-key the route and just post it here.

I would guess, and I hope I'm not being presumptuous, that the route can be posted here.

That would be so nice of you, Linda!

Thanks!

Here's the route instructions, as re-keyed.  I left out the questions, but if anyone wants those, along with the answers and it doesn't cause Kevin any concerns, I'll be happy to post those as well. If you would prefer these by email in a Word doc, just send me a PM with your email address and I'll forward them to you. - Linda

TULIP RALLYE INSTRUCTIONS!

Are you ready for a GREAT TIME?

[Remember:  Double quotes (“ “) indicate a hint, a play on words, or a pun relating to the answer; single quotes (‘ ‘) indicate a direct quote from the object which is the answer.  Make sense to you?  Good.  Maybe you can explain it to us someday.  Just kidding!  Good luck, now!  Remember:  You have been allowed four hours maximum to complete the rallye and turn-in this score sheet.  Plenty of time, really.  Please print your answers!

AND YER’ OFF!  Throw a smirk at those still waiting their turn to go.  Taunts and snide remarks are always appreciated by the Rallymasters.

Look both ways, now!  Safety first!

ð     Straight at stop sign – Stay in the right lane

ð     Straight at the next stop sign

ð     Turn right at signal onto Burlington Blvd

ð     Stay on Burlington Blvd. for approximately 3 miles

ð     Burlington Blvd. becomes Riverside Drive

ð     Enjoy the new overpass into downtown Mt. Vernon

Deception Pass Bridge

This narrow band of water separates the north end of Whidbey Island from the mainland.  The Deception Pass Bridge is a well-known feat of engineering joining Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands.

The name “Deception Pass” is derived from Captain Vancouver’s realization that what he had mistaken for a peninsula was actually an island.  The captain named the inlet at which he was anchored to commemorate the error.

In approximately 2 miles, prepare for left turn.

ð     Turn left onto Troxell

ð     Turn right onto Monkey Hill Road

ð     On Curve, go straight to stop sign – USE CAUTION

Move to left when second lane begins (think second line may have been redundant)

ð     At signal, go straight for about 5 miles

ð     Turn left onto Madrona Way

ð     At stop sign, go straight

(Did you know that Coupeville “starred” in the movie ‘Practical Magic’ with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kiddman?  If you saw the movie, the street along the waterfront may look familiar!)

ð     Turn right onto Main

Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve Information

Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve provides a vivid historical record of Pacific Northwest history, including the first exploration of Puget Sound by Captain George Vancouver in 1792; early settlement by Colonel Isaac Ebey, an important figure in Washington Territory; growth and settlement resulting from the Oregon Trail and the Westward migration; the Donation Land Laws (1850-1855); and the continued growth and settlement of the town of Coupeville.

With the fast growing Puget Sound region, Ebey’s Landing NHR has quickly become the remaining area where a broad spectrum of Northwest history is still clearly visible in the landscape.  The historical landscape of the reserve appears to today’s visitors much as it did a century ago, when New England sea captains were drawn to Penn Cove.  Historic farms are still farmed, forests harvested and century-old buildings used as homes or places of business.

Unlike many National Park units, the 25 square mile historical reserve encompasses a mixture of federal, state, county, and private property, all managed in a way that preserves its historic essence.  This means that changes in the cultural landscape will continue, but in a way that respects the past.

There are two state parks within Ebey’s Landing NHR, as well as the historic waterfront town of Coupeville, one of the oldest towns in Washington State.

ð      Turn left on Engle Road

ð      At stop sign, go straight

ð      At signal, go straight (Highway 20)

ð      At stop sign, go straight

ð      Turn left onto Main (downtown Coupeville)

ð      Turn left onto Alexander

ð      Turn right onto Coveland – follow around to left onto Madrona Way.  Stay on Madrona Way

ð      Turn right onto Highway 20 (you will go about 5 miles) – get into the left lane – Highway 20 goes to the left

Over the next few miles, review your paperwork.

YOU’RE ALMOST DONE!  We’re so proud of you this is going to be an emotional experience for us.

ð      Turn Right at “T” intersection and onto Highway 20 eastbound

With Bridge in view, prepare to Turn Right

ð      Turn Right onto Casino Drive

ð      Turn Left onto Casino Drive

ð      Go around “round about” and head towards Northern Lights Casino

ð      Go straight at stop.  Look for the Rallymaster on your left who will give you your time in.  Please record your mileage on your form if your odometer is working.  (Doubtful for most British cars)  MAKE SURE your form is completely filled out, including all that important stuff on the top of the first page.  OK?  Hand it in to the Rallymaster and take a break!  Well done.

We thank you for helping to celebrate the 25 Year Anniversary of this event.  Answering these questions without complaint indirectly aids starving widows and orphans around the world.  It’s too complex to explain.  Trust us.

Dumb question:

I know that Kevin indicated that there were several sets of instructions so you couldn't just follow someone and I know that we saw cars on different cross roads from time to time, so how is it that everyone would have had the same questions in the same order?  (Which is the order he read the answers in) Seems as though you would have to all be taking the same route to answer the questions in that order.  What am I missing?

Now you know why I'm occasionally referred to as -

Everyone passed the same clue in the same order but how they got there was the thing.  You can get to the same place by a different route, this is the nice thing about these events.  Even if you are one street off they find all the different ways for everyone to travel.  Just think of how many ways you can go to the same store.

Oh, yeah.  Now I get it.  What part did time play into it?  Was it used as a tie breaker and did they figure out equal alternate routes so it could be used?  What a lot of work!

I remain,
