This new device that interfaces with iPhone (and soon Android) looks pretty cool and since the use a Mini in the video you know it will work on our cars. But if you get a good score for accelerating slowly and braking gently, then I will play like golf and go for a low score!
It can read and reset codes as well. http://www.automatic.com/ |

Haha, I don't think anyone with a MINI should own one of these, it would tell all of us we're horrible drivers and wasting a ton of gas.
Just sayin'. =)

We should all get one and then compete for low score on a drive. Leave the high score for the Prius crowd!

I have a device that nags me about my driving. It came with my MINI and it's what I call "that +*@##& DSC light!"
I just watched the video and it'd be great if it did one thing I didn't see mentioned. That one thing is to alert you when you are causing traffic. So many people around here have no idea how their driving style is affecting the flow of traffic. This could help that if it could communicate with other units so it knew the average rate of travel (advise drivers to speed up or slow down to get within the average), understood congestion patterns (suggest drivers take alternate routes or not drive at this time which saves fuel), etc. Otherwise it's just a fancy accelerometer that can clear codes. The price is right though as it's cheaper than the reigning cheap favorite: The Scangauge II. Edited by ipeverywhere - March/20/13 at 7:30am |

It took them a lot longer to get into production and into beta for the iPhone app...
I received my "dongle" last night, but could not get it installed. I tried again this morning without success. My email was q answered by their QA Manager and after the suggested restart of my phone it connected while I gobbled a burger from Frugal's. It read the codes for my check engine light and let me clear them to see if they are legitimate. The device scores your driving (deductions for speed over 70, braking too hard, accelerating too briskly). On a scale where 100 is "the best" if you are a weenie behind the wheel....I got a 28 on my short drive to work. Good thing I have high-pitch hearing loss because I know it was beeping like a sumbitch! For those who can't remember where they parked it automatically stores the location of the car on the map. That might be handy at the casino or mall. I won't have a chance to play with it for a high score for a few days as we fly out for San Diego in the morning. I had codes P0128 Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature) and P0597 Thermostat Heater Control Circuit/Open. Let's see if they come back.

I don't need another nag in the car telling me what I'm doing wrong, but it does interest me. I must have this weird relationship with wanting to be a good nice SLOW driver and trying to put the pedal down. Good twin / Evil twin.

The problem with a device that tell you are causing traffic problems and being a dumb a-- is that those who need them would never buy one!

We have success....I officially have a score of 1 on a scale of 1 to 100 where the larger number, the more economically you are driving. I started out at 40 on day 1 of using the Automatic device...I worked it down to 1. I'll bet if I took it back to Maryhill I could get a negative number! |

I have a couple MINI Rally ideas we could do using this device. All of them violate the guidelines :P
Glad to see you are enjoying your drive and ignoring the device. Safe is fast! |

Congrats on your score! So what do we call this? In Golf it's an under par score.
How about under the Radar????? |
