Our 2003 Mini Super seems to have an issue with registering the amount of gas in the tank immediately after we fill up. Has anyone else had this problem? Once the tank is about 1/4 down, it starts to show again, but it does not seem to be consistent. Any input is appreciated

The EXACT SAME THING happened to me with my Indi Blue MC. I'd say that it happens in my S but it's digital now so I'm not certain how accurate they are.
But that is common from what I know/have heard Tristan See you 2 in the morning? |

Sounds like a problem with a sticky sensor in the tank. Anybody
fix this around here? Tristan? Does the tank have to come
down?

I'm anxious to see if anyone has a solution. We're still having problems with our headlights too. They just don't seem to be aimed properly. There must be a way to set a "baseline" they are so out of whack that high beam is the only way we get decent visibility. Tristan, got your message, sorry we weren't able to make it. Hopefully we'll get back into the swing of things soon. It's awfully early for a Saturday morning! ! ! ! Thanx all! ! ! !

Have read 3 or 4 threads at NAM, all say the same thing sticky sensor in the tank. I guess its under the passenger side rear seat. here is on of them. http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/showthread.php?t =94011&highlight=fuel+sensor+tank |

If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough.

After reading the info on John's link and searching other NAM threads, I got out the Bentley book. There are two
sending units, one in each half of the saddlebag style fuel tank.
One is included in the fuel pump, and one in the fuel filter. I'm
not sure if both have to be working at the same time to make the guage
work or make the transfer pump work or what, but the process to take
them out is fairly straightforward. Once out, I'm not sure what
then - no test procedure mentioned (though with a multimeter you should
be able to measure increasing resistance). If I have the problem
with my car, I might try taking things apart. Not sure I want to
do this on somebody else's car - the tank draining procedure can be a
handful... Mechanic time...

I have the same issue with a 1990 Dodge truck. I won't fix it because the work is worth as much as the truck but the concept is the same. The sender/float is out of adjustment or stuck. The assembly is under your back seats, one left. one right.Bentley Manual Pgs 160-7 thru -9 makes it look very easy. It is hard to see from the pics if the assemblies are something you could fiddle with but it is a mechanical sender so I would be trying that first. Clean em up, check em out.. you know the drill. Good luck.

As mentioned above, you have to remove the rear seats to even attempt to fix it, and then is it worth the time and fuel that could spill into the Interior?

I think interiors are highly overrrated. Ah the smell of gasoline! Perhaps an upgrade to a fuel cell would solve the whole problem!
Just kidding. Best of luck whatever course you take. |
