Topic: Only "25" miles to oil change Posted: November/23/07 at 11:50am |
At least that's what the computer thing says. It went from 100 miles to
25 in one day of not much driving at all. Anyway, I should have been
thinking of this earlier, but these seem like a good deal:
http://www.minicarparts.net/Parts/11_42_7_512_446.cfm
Along with a 36mm wrench and a new drain plug, I should be all set.
Questions- has anybody ever tried this brand of filters and does the drain
plug need to be replaced in its entirety each time the oil is changed? That
seems kind of wasteful. On the Renault, you just had to swap out the
copper gasket. Why can't the rubber gasket on this plug be changed out?
And, yes, I'm doing this myself and will be using synthetic oil. I don't
want to pay dealer prices for an oil change and only me or a dealer will
ever change the oil in my car. Three different chains tried to wreck the
Renault and I'm never going back to those types of places.
In lighter news, I saw Gumby today driving into a parking garage in
downtown Seattle. I was going to run up and introduce myself, but then
realized that I had my work vehicle (TV satellite truck) with me instead of
the MINI, and would have appeared to be just another crazy on the streets
of Seattle instead of a MINI owner.

Dealer oil change is free, but they want you to wait until the counter is within a couple hundred of zero.
Haven't used that filter, but have used several others.
The drain plug is reusable until the rubber gasket splits. The new gasket comes with the metal part attached...
Be careful to make sure you don't cut the gasket on the filter cap or
mis-align the cap when reinstalling. Push the filter down hard
over the post. After the gasket starts to seat (cap is harder to
turn), you still have a ways to go before the cap is fully on.
Several members have had issues with these last bits, resulting in big
puddles on the floor.
Other than that - pretty easy.

MiniCarParts advertises on NAM so it's got to be ligit. Otherwise, that filter in the pic NEXT to the filter box looks like a stock filter. (the company might have bought the OEM filters from the original manufacturer and is selling as their own.... Happens all the time) Good Luck! PS.. I think you know this, but just in case. You should be okay/just fine for going over the Oil Change OMeter by a little bit.)

Sorry- this is a used '02 I am talking about, now with 58,000 miles or so. If the dealer oil change is still free, great, but I think that only applies to new cars and their first oil change, right?
Thanks for the advice. I'll be ordering a set of filters and a plug just to have on hand as a spare.

Make sure the oil filter comes with a new O-ring for the cap - if it
doesn't, order one. You can use the old one in a pinch, but after
it has been heated up a couple of times, it starts getting hard and one
way or another, start causing leaks.

Dealer free changes are 3yr/36k miles so yeah, you'd be on the hook.
It is very easy to change the oil yourself and I found it to be little mess as well compared to other cars I've done. Just watch the cross threading when putting the canister back on is the biggest problem I've seen.

Just watch the cross threading when putting the canister back on is the biggest problem I've seen. Yes it is!! Be very careful. If it takes 10 minutes to do, make sure it goes on right!
