I dropped of the S-lites for a dose of powdercoat today... Should have them

Flat black s-lites... I like.  In fact, I was thinking of doing similar, though I'm leaning toward gloss for mine.

Can we ask how much it costs to do this and where?  I've always wanted to do it, since I ended up with a ding in my rim.

It was a tough decision for me, I was torn between gloss and flat, but in the
end, flat won out. I was originally leaning toward gloss but thought black
might look a little meaner, and closer matched to the black plastic fender
skirts...

I can let you know for sure when I pick them up, but they said 40 a wheel
plus the time for bead blasting the wheels, probably a couple of hours at 60
an hour, so all told about 300.

$300 for new set of custom S-lites sounds pretty cheap.    Unfortunately when your broke, it might as well be a million.

But its cheaper than the consequences of letting your wife drive the car with
the summer Dunlop 9000 DSST's around in the rain, and possible snow
which is what is happening now... I cant swap them out fast enough...

I know very little about Powdercoating - what colors are available?

I think all colors are available.  Power coating is the process of electrifying or creating an electrostatic surface and then a special paint powder is sprayed on the metal surface which sticks.  Then it needs to be baked to cure the paint.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this was the understanding I have.

Actually... As weird as it may sound, more than all colors are available... For
instance, Black, normally a pretty easy choice, but there was 100% Gloss
black ranging all the way down to 0% Flat Black, then there are texture
choices to throw in there as well. I think there was about 25 different
choices of black...

Spencer, you are right on for the process... When the powder is baked it
turns into a thick gel like substance that fills in voids a little better than
paint and when it dries, is a lot harder than paint...

There are a lot of options.  Cardinal is a brand that many local shops use and is what I have on my Kosei rims.

http://www.cardinalpaint.com/a_img/PowderBrochure.pdf

The on line color samples don't do the colors justice though.  Even pictures for that matter.  If you've seen my wheels in person they are much darker than what you see in this link http://www.psmini.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2010&KW= powder+coat and have much more depth to them than what you see in the samples on line.

I'll be getting one of my wheels media blasted and coated again this winter.  I had to have it repaired at the end of summer due to the pot hole from hell.

Got the call today and they are done... Much quicker than I thought. I dont
think I will be able to get a picture of them until Wednesday. I am picking
them up tomorrow but wont be home until late... Hopefully will have them
mounted by this weekend. Assuming that the tires I ordered get here...

Here is a pic of one of the wheels... Its a bad shot, shot with my iphone at night in the back of my truck... But it gives you an idea of what they look like... I am mounting this weekend and will try to take a couple shots of the car with the new shoes...

Yeah, they bead blasted the wheels and then powdercoat them... Total cost was $120 (2 hrs at $60/hr) for the bead blasting and $160 ($40 per wheel) for the powdercoating... With tax I was out the door for $300

Very nice!  I may have to get my S-Lites done this summer.  I still have to get one one Kosei repaired from a run in with a pot hole from hell this summer (blast and coat again).

Here is kind of a cool link for powder with a lot of color choices. You would just have to talk to your painter about the use of these colors.

Oh, man!  Wish I had time to do this!  The witer S-Lites are getting tires tomorrow.  Oh, well.  Maybe next year.  At least it gives me time to figure out what color I would want.  How would red look on a Dark Silver & White car?   Hmmmmmmm....

Wow. Seriously nice. And really mean looking. Where did you get inspired? (Yes, I'm too lazy to go back and read all the posts up to this one.)

Oh: And what are the tires? (Again: Pardon the laziness)

No worries scoop... I dont know what inspired me to do black. I knew I
wanted to run a second set of wheels for winter tires, so I picked up the S-
lites on craigslist. They werent in perfect condition so I wanted to do
something and I figured black goes with everything. I was torn on whether
to do glossy black or matte, and I had a couple of friends talk into the matte
and I think it was the right choice...

As far as the tires, they are my winter set-up so I went with the Bridgestone
Blizzak LM-25...
