Topic: Mini's seem less expensive in Oregon Posted: September/09/08 at 6:45am |
I was bouncing around on the web and looking at Craiglist listings for both Seattle and Portland. I never really notice till today, but it seems that Mini's sell for alot less down there.
I know one is from a dealer so it has a higher markup, but the less expensive car also has 15,000 less miles?!?
Oh, one is a S. But still...

Auto transmission on the S also... that adds some $$ to the price.

My MCS was pretty inexpensive at $17,000 before dealer/buyer markup...

The farther south you go down the coast the cheaper cars get. The "other" car I now own was $6000 less in Portland than any equal car I could find in Seattle.

Below is the average price of 10 randomly selected 2006 MINI Coopers for sale on Craigslist and Auto Trader in their respective markets (private party, excluding GT models)

Next up is average MINI dealer pricing on used 2007 models. Portland and Las Vegas listed no inventory/said "Call us," which I won't. Still, this is a good representation of the difference up and down the coast.

So, the unscientific data analysis:
- Buying from a dealer? Baxter has the right idea: Soak up some sun and head to SoCal. Plus, the drive back is a hoot
- Buying private party? Vegas, baby!

Thanks! A friend of Rich's is looking for a MINI and asked me about it over the weekend. This is great information for him, as he's retired so would have plenty of time to head south. He is under strict instructions to join the club, of course.

Of course
Bear in mind I did not factor in several things, including cost to transport/drive vehicles back up here, sales tax and licensing in WA, etc.

MINIS don`t seem to sell as fast in the Portland area. Rasmussen is smaller than NW MINI, and still the waiting period was/is usually shorter for a new car. (4 months versus 14 months for an S in late `06 (mine). It makes sense that used MINIS are cheaper there.

When I purchased just over a year ago, I paid between 5 and 6,000 less by buying through Autotrader (used) from Mini of Hawaii than what I could get a comparable car around here for. It was just around 1,000 to ship directly to pier 25. No crazy trucker ever touched my car!
This price difference made a MINI affordable. Otherwise, I'd belong to the Kia Speck club.

Amtrak! That's the way I went and it was great. Took my wireless card and worked on the train on the way to Portland.

Wish I would have researched more before our purchase.
Well, always good info for the future if another Mini is in the cards. Hmmm. Fly to Hawaii and buy a Mini. Sounds like a plan! (someday...)
