...anyone think it's a good idea to do this at around 5000 miles-doesn't it
prolong tire life?? (rather than waiting for the 10,000 service)

If you watch the wear you should be see if it wearing then rotate.  I watch my tread and have not rotated my tires yet. I am at 10100
