I took my car in for an oil change, and was told I should also have some other "stuff" done.  When the car came back, I was sure I could hear a distinct sound, that I'd never heard before, coming from under the hood.  It was an unpleasant buzz that overpowered what I consider to be appealing mechanical noises that I'm used to hearing.  Every time I was in the car I would try to isolate the noise.  I determined it was related to engine speed, but not much else.  I was heading out of town on a 500 mile road trip, and wanted someone to tell me there was nothing wrong.  I called Seattle MINI on a Wednesday, and asked if they could see me on Friday.  I explained the situation, and was told that though there were no appointments available, they'd take care of me.  I showed up and was asked to wait 20-25 minutes for a tech.   No problem!  The tech was billed as having the best ears in the shop.  I did a lame impression of the sound I was hearing, drove around the parking lot, occasionally saying, "There, did you hear that?"  Even though I think the tech thought I was crazy, and he didn't actually hear what I was describing, we pulled the car into a service bay.  He took the plastic cover off the intercooler, tightened the bolts that attach the rubber bellows to the ends of the intercooler, then tightened the cover down.  The annoying sound was gone.  It made the trip much more enjoyable, not having to listen to that buzz and wondering if I was damaging the engine in the process.

I had a GM product many years ago that had a weird noise on start-up in it.  The dealership "Could never find the noise", so I recorded it.  So I would turn on the recorder, announce date, time and engine temp status; I got lots of recordings of that weird sound.  When I let the dealership listen to the recordings his reply was "That doesn't mean anything".

You got lucky having a dealership find the source of the noise!

I wish there was a local MINI Dealership, like our Honda, Subaru, Mazada and VW.
