Linda says the radio in WOODSTOCK is not working as it should and would like to have it replaced with one that has Sattelite Radio. I don't follow the car radio market anymore (can't hear the damn things) so I don't know know what is a good fit for the MINI. Looking for some good advice.
Details: WOODSTOCK is a 2005 Cooper S Cabrieo with the Factory Harmon Kardon (SP?) upgrade. Replacement will not have Navigation, super power, earth shaking bass, multi CD player, little buttons or a complicated screen interface.. Needs to have Sattelite Radio, Single CD Player, AM / FM Radio, Could have iPod interface / MP3 interface / USB Port. Looking for simple install, good match with MINI interior, and reasonable price. I do have a concern about the need for a separate antenna for Sattelite Radio. Used would be acceptable. |

You can get Sirius/XM addon kits that add Satellite functionality to the existing radio. Best way to stay stock. MINIs with aftermarket radios just don't look right to me.

Is the add on a MINI item or something from one of the auto stereo shops? I'll check Crutchfield and see what they have. Also - she says the radio is not picking up good AM / FM reception - I'll have to look into the antena connnection to see if that might be the problem. If not, I'm probabably looking for a good used MINI radio from someone who upgraded. I think with the HK stup the headunit is the same, it is just an additonal amp and different speakers. Not sure...

You are aware that the sat systems cut out when going into heavy tree areas and in east/west canyons. I have had them in the last 4 cars we own and really hate listening to something and having it cut out right in the middle of the commentary or music.

I wish there was a local MINI Dealership, like our Honda, Subaru, Mazada and VW.

Jack...the add is is via Sirius//XM. Rarely have cut out problems with the sat around here. If you lived in a heavily wooded are you might. Great or long trips and lots of great specialty stations. We have it in our house too

We have SR in KEMOSABE and it works great around here and on most of the trips we have taken - Have lots of MP3 CD's and a half dozen iPods for when the SR might not be working... Probably wouldn't be looking for SR for WOODSTOCK but snce we probably need to replace the radio might as well see about SR since Linda really likes listening to it.

You have six iPods? This Apple shareholder thanks you!
I seem to remember that the antenna in a MINI is some sort of amplified/diversity/proprietary system instead of just an antenna run through coax into the back of the radio, like in your 1970 Impala or whatever. On my car that box is inside one of the fender under one of the rear windows. On a Cabrio its location might be different. If both the AM and FM bands are experiencing poor reception that's where I would start. You might also try putting on the original antenna if you've gone stubby. It may have gone bad or you might reveal corrosion or other problems with the antenna mount. I have a spare radio I could lend you if you want to do some experimenting (no easy iPod connectivity since it's an '02 model). You might also want to check in on NAM to see what experiences others have had with upgrading the head unit in an HK system. I seem to remember that it is problematic. Good luck with it- Bruce |

I have two XM Radios that I don't use and at this point never will. If you simply want an external XM radio that will plug into the AUX jack you are welcome to give them a go.
One is better then the other but the one that isn't so good comes pretty close to matching the orange/red interior dash lights. Both fit neatly under the center console in the cubbyhole area. |
