Question for those who've done one or both in the past...if you had to pick one national event which would you choose?

AMVIV or MITM?

First couple of years at AMVIV were great - but then it seemed to become kind of boring.  MINIs In The Mountains has been fun - and it is a great location, but it is a little more expensive and a longer drive.  Only family issues and obligations kept us from doing MITM last year...

I've never been to MITM. I go to AMVIV as a social event. I don't really drive much, or at all, at AMVIV. In fact, I may fly down this year depending on what the club does (we are still discussing). I know lots of people and it's a good time to hang-out, catch-up, gamble, drink, see some cool MINIs, etc. MITM has some amazing drives with excellent scenery and even a, very popular, auto-cross. I love the atmosphere of Vegas so any chance to go I'm there. MITM is much more focused on the driving than what AMVIV has become. Also, the drive to MITM can be much better as you are not stuck on the Great Basin Highway. Although, the route I planned to AMVIV a year ago was pretty spectacular but took 4 days. It also depends on how much holiday you want to burn. AMVIV can be a quick (3 day) event if you are short on time. MITM, not so much.

I guess my advice is to not compare them because they are different events. Both are worth getting to and MITM is on my list to go to at some point but probably a few years away. AMVIV is easy and I'll probably end up there every year for that reason. MITM will take some planning on my part as I will combine it with seeing friends in CO as well as some other sites along the way.

But, you asked about a national event... AMVIV isn't nearly considered as close to national event anymore. Regional is much more like it with most of the attendees coming in from CA. MITM gets a much bigger turn out and MINIs on the Dragon is bigger yet. But don't forget, MINI Takes the States happens in 2014 as well. So much MINI! So little time!

Any folks coming thru the Tri-Cities this year?
I will be leaving Tuesday morning, driving into OR, thru Pendleton to Burns to Fields, OR and into NV. Thru Winnemucca to Battle Mountain to Austin into LV. Very minimal freeway and lots of empty two lane roads...the only way to fly. Probably stay in Battle Mountain on the way down.

For the first time, I will be attending AMVIV by myself. Steve is staying home to restore a truck he hopes to take to the annual American Historical Truck Society's national truck show and convention that's being held in Yakima this year: http://www.aths.org/convention

Because I'm traveling solo in my MINI, I'm hoping that I can share a room at the Red Rock Casino Resort Spa with a female MINI enthusiast. Gina - Are you going this year? If I can't room with someone, then I may just fly down for the event and stay with my cousin (who doesn't live too far from the host hotel). However, I'd be without a MINI and will be looking to be a navigator if possible on some of the drives.

So.... Who's all planning on making the trek south?

To any and all who are going to AMVIV in May -- Larry and I have worked out a route that we are taking and welcome anyone to join us who would like to.  We're going to take 3 days driving, stopping the first  night in Klamath Falls.  The next day we are going to go into the Lava Beds National Monument and do some sightseeing there, then on to Reno for the night.  Then the next day we are driving on into Vegas.  Send me a PM if you are interested in driving with us and I can send you more specific information.

Well, I need to make a decision soon as to whether I'm flying one-way or roundtrip. Are there no solo drivers to AMVIV this year? I'd like to tag along if so. I'll contribute towards gas and get my own hotel room on the way down. I plan on flying home on the 19th. Let me know soon...
I've got a roommate at the host hotel (Red Rock Casino) from May 15th and checking out the 19th. She'll be driving in from California on Wednesday, so I've got my hotel stay at AMVIV covered. Smile
