Does anyone know if there is a way to ID a getrag 6speed (close ratio or wide ratio) if the sticker is missing ?

I have heard you can call a mini dealer; and if your very nice; and give them your VIN they can tell you pretty much everything about the vehicle. I don't know if that does not include the transmission. But the important peice you could collect would be your build date, and with that info and some research you could see what manual was being used at the time of "birth" Tongue

They'll ask you for the last 7 digits of your VIN, and be able to tell you everything about your car. Though I didn't know there were two different Getrag trans made for our cars, I was under the impression there was a CVT, 5 spd, 6spd, and the 6spd auto.

SmileYea I don't know, I just know that calling them is a sure fire way to get your build date, and because of that, find out what your car has!

Mike - I think there is a close ratio box or a different differential in my JCW.  After wondering why my factory hot rod couldn't keep up with a stock '04 S at the Spokane track, I did a little research.  At 70 mph side by side with an '06 S, both cars in 6th gear, I am turning about 450 RPM higher that the stock car.  At 80 the difference is greater, and my tires were slightly bigger.  At just over 125, I hit the rev limiter.  Still, Mini INSISTS there is no difference anywhere in the gearing between my car and the stock car.  So good luck in finding out about what you are asking.  I would be VERY interested if you hear anything different that I've been told.

Thanks buddy.P

Rev Limiter at 125?  Did they lower it in 06?  I run up to 140 before mine hits the wall, 03 MCS.

With a long enough straight, a stock '06 S will pass me by.  The guys at Mini say I should learn how to exit a turn properly.  I tell them there is PLENTY of room left at Spokane to gain more speed, regardless of HOW poorly I take the entrance turn.  They still insist there is no difference is the gearing set up.

Something else I notice, though I haven't tested it, is I am WAY quicker off the line and thru the first few gears (if I can keep the wheels from spinning).

Don't know, and don't really care anymore as I've given up HPDE.  I still like the car a lot.  I just have to believe there is something different with the JCW gearing.

Sorry for the hijack, Mike.

I read that there is a difference from the 2002-05 with regards to gearing.  There is a difference between 3rd and 4th.  I will look through links I read in the past couple of weeks and see if I can find it.  Jest was that in 06 and above they made 3rd-4th a closer mesh so they match output evenly.  There is a graph somewhere that shows the diff between the two.

As Far as the 2006 JCW and stock they should have the tranny. You can take 2 exact cars use exact same parts and one will be faster than the other. For no other reason than it is.

The diff between the early 02-04 and later 04-06 is 1st and second gears. 3,4,5 6th close to the same.
