Topic: Hi, I'm new... Posted: April/14/08 at 12:56pm |
I been reading the forums here since I placed the order for my '08 Chili Red MC back on February 4th. It arrived at the VDC in California on last Monday. I expect it to arrive at Rasmussen Mini any day now so I thought I would finally make post and let you know that I am here!
My name is Tony (I really haven't thought of a clever nickname yet) and I live with my wonderful wife Kat in Edmonds. I have wanted a MC for quite a while but I am not really a car enthusiast like so many of you. I decided I needed a car for my shop (I service all makes of european cars) and I wanted something that would draw attention. The MC seemed to fit the bill. That's the story I used on my wife anyway.
I am excited to go along on some of the events that the club is involved with and was hoping to make it to the Tulip Rallye but it looks like that will probably be the weekend that we are picking up the new car.
Anyway, one question, do I have to actually have a name for my MC?

Welcome, Tony. A name is not required, but I think you'll find that most of us have named ours. We're just kinda fanatical that way. ;)

Welcome!
Most folks name their MINIs as one of the first steps to making them unique to the personality of the owner. No law says you have to name your MC it is just something a lot of folks do.
PSMini is a great club loaded with lots of good folks who enjoy having a good time with their MINIs. It is a very active club and the summer time brings on lots of different events. Hope to see you at one or more! Check the events calendar for info on past and upcoming events.
Happy Motoring,
Don

Hi Tony & Kat -
Welcome to the club - I think you will be very happy here - it is a great group and we have lots of things going on for all kinds of enthusiasts - from social events to track days. And, no , you do not have to have a name for your MC - although I would bet that after a short time owning one you will have a name just like the rest of us. You just can't be indifferent to a MINI!

Hi Tony,
Welcome and glad to hear from a to-be owner - and another Chili Red to boot. No need to name your MC - but you will be required to wave to other MINI owners (even if they don't wave back - they may take the hint).
CR/CR or CR/W or CR/B? Packages? Anticipated mods?

Welcome, Tony & Kat! Couple of things:
- Most of us were not car enthusiasts either, until we got our MINI. You will notice that some of us apparently turned into multiple car enthusiasts overnight since we now have MINI's. Others are equally bitten and spend as much as a second vehicle on their "habit" (look at their list of mods in the signatures).
- You do not need to name your MINI. But you will. In fact, I bet by the time you get home with your MINI it will have a name.
- I also bet that you will start searching the DMV database to determine whether the name you have for your MINI can somhow be spelled out on a license plate.
- As soon as you get pictures, you need to post them so we can have fresh
car porn images to drool over. This group never met a picture of a MINI it didn't like.

hey Tony, I'm new too. I am jealous that you got to order one off the press. I saw mine at a lot and had to have it. I wasn't planning on getting myself a car that day.
I don't have a name for her yet either... hmmm.

Hi Tony & Kat,
Welcome to the club! You'll find that we all kind of turn into Miniacs as time goes on. I know that I did! You don't need to name your Mini. Mine doesn't really have much of a name... The name "hapa" is shortened a bit (one of my nicknames actually). I should have named my Mini "Hapa Haole" meaning "half white" in Hawaiian (like me). It's kinda half white & half hyper blue (on the outside anyways).
I hope to see you at one of the upcoming events. It's always so much fun to drive with a pack of MINIs. Congrats on your soon arrival...

Tony and Kat ... Welcome to our group of MINI nuts! And, may I second that great color choice!!!!! My MINI is nameless too, but a good one might just pop up any day now. I suggest you busily try to figure out how to drive all of your break-in miles as soon as possible. We have some great drives coming up. Wine everyone!
Hijack Alert - Rachelle, I did the same thing. Took one car in for an oil change and brought home two, having never even seen a MINI close enough to touch. I think it's a genetic delight. We're all just infected somehow.

My MINIs name came about in part because of my wife. The name is Kirby. Deanne drove the car her first time, and described it like this:
"This car reminds me of a vacuum cleaner. You know, a really good vacuum cleaner? One that sucks itself along. This car sucks itself along. It WANTS to be driven."
After relaying that story, it was our own RobN that suggested Kirby. I figured it was a bit more obscure than Hoover, so I went with it. :)

Hi Tony and Kat! Like Rachelle, I didn't plan on getting a MINI the day I did, I went to Costco to get the new Harry Potter book and the Hertz lot nearby had a MINI calling my name, and well, it came home with me! I had been thinking about one for about a year, and had planned to get A car in July, just didn't plan on it that day! But I wheeled (test drove) and dealed (not cards) and well, I couldn't pass it up! I love my car!!!!! Someday I will get pics on here, but at this time, a. no camera (except cell phone) yet, and b. not too computer literate! My car just reminded me of those silly Beany Babies, so hence the name! Welcome to the group, and will hopefully meet you and your wife at an event!

Welcome to the club both of you. You'll have the time of your life when that new car shows up. You'll be finding excuses to burn fuel even if it costs $3.75/gallon. Trust me...you will.

I think it is important to get the feel of the mini before naming it. Although mine named itself, by way of decoration---union jacks everywhere= jaqjaq. 'nough said.
the name will come--if not, oh well--that is part of the mini charm.
Welcome.

Welcome Tony!
As many have said here, you have no idea what you've gotten yourself into. My husband used to talk about his dad being part of car clubs & I was like "Well, he seems like a normal person, but I just don't get it." After owning a MINI, I TOTALLY get it. It's like you've purchased a new way of life with a ton of new friends. Actually, they should include that information in the marketing campaign!
As for a name - it will come. I kept building mine on MINIUSA & saved it everytime as People Eater (for the song "One Eyed, One Horned Flying Purple People Eater"). It just stuck & it's become it's own personality. Just be patient & the name will come.
Question to all ... Cars are usually considered "female", but most people I talk to see to lean towards male reference when talking about their cars. Any idea why?

I think that in some european languages the words for automobile take the feminine article and when translated into english took the feminine pronoun "she" as a result. Same thing happened with boats.

Now there is a can of worms. Actual to start with and get out of the way is originally Women as a general practice where not allowed to operate or own vehicles until after WWII, the 30's is kind of a gray fuzzy area. But after the war in the 50's to current it became more common place. With that taken into account I will see how much trouble I get into with the next part. Since the early days automobiles have been considered temperamental along with other traits inherent to you Ladies (Which is why we Love you so much) combined with men wanting to tame and control everything it was destined that automobiles took on female names. Now enter the automobile manufactures purposely adding curvaceous line to automobiles and using sex to sell their product it now became common place to refer to a automobile as HER. It has been said that a truly classic car contains both sexes, an aggressive front end (male) and nice flowing lines with a curvaceous rear (female) which I have to agree with. Now in answering the other part of your question why lean towards male. Because with all of the cookie cutter stamp outs of today are not much more then a computer on wheels(facts/data) the automobiles of today have become cold and listless. With a few exceptions the days of a sex hot cars have given way to gas mileage, affordability, and size. Exceptions? The Mini is just that it is sex yet cute, old but new, aggressive male yet an elegant female so how you name your Mini falls directly on the owner and their feelings toward the car. And yes I wanted real bad to give my car a female name. All of my other cars have been female even my 4x4's. But in this case to me and my mini it is all male, if it was a different color with different features it may have been the other way, but as it sits that is the way it is. Okay lets see how much trouble I get into over this post John

I'm female and I wasn't offended at all. But then again, I'm a little different. I've rebuilt a Datsun 510 engine, gapped my own plugs and am restoring a Bug Eye from the ground up.
We never did name our 1974 Triumph TR6. Nothing seemed to fit. The Bug Eye is bright Iris blue so is Iris. How's that for original? My 1970 TR6 was damson in colour so was called Ted (Ted Danson, get it?) Even the new owners call the car Ted.
Velveteen was all elegant, understated female. (Cooper CVT). Works is all aggressive, look at me male. (JCW Competition Edition).
Now let's see how much trouble I get into for that.
Welcome all newcomers. You've joined a great bunch.

Hi and welcome! It took me a long time to name my MINI. I got her in Aug. of 06 and I just figured out her name last month... I wasn't interested in naming her until I found the name and then it was just perfect so I had to do it! Good Luck and take your time in the naming process until you find something that fits perfect
