hello All,

Your opinions, please.

I’m going to refresh my White MiniLite wheels for the winter season as they are a bit rough.

So, the question is: Should I repaint them or should I powder coat them?

Experience and thoughts on the subject?

Thanks!
John Benny

If you do have them powder coated, I can recommend http://www.powdercoatinginc.com in Mukilteo, WA.  I have had them powder coat some parts on the classic Mini I'm rebuilding.  They're a great bunch and do some nice work.

Powder Coating Inc did some work for my office on a small custom job we did, and they did a great job for us too. Quick turn around and a reasonable price, and the quality was top notch.

thanks All, for your responses.
Powder coating is the choice and I appreciate the vendor recommendation, too.
Will post some pics when complete

I'd be interested in knowing a price range to powercoat four S-Lites.

My son had a set of wheels done that are like the S_lites for $200.  I have some S-Lites that I may have done.

I had my S-Lites powdercoated last fall for the winter time set up... Powdercoating Inc in Mukilteo did them for me and I couldnt be happier with them. They came out way better than what I was expecting. They ran about $300 for blasting and powdercoating... I believe powdercoating only was about $45 a wheel, but thats from memory, which isnt very good... I went with flat black, and really like the results...

Same place did my Kosei K1s.  Great shop.  Very reasonable rates.

Powdercoating will look better and last longer over time.  The only downfall I would say is if you are not careful and curb/have to repair a rim you can't just touch them up.  You're also limited in color choices, unlike paint.  If you have to repair a powercoated rim they also can't blast it, you have to hand sand the coating to rough it up and then coat over the top of it (don't ask me how I know... Cry).

I highly recommend having them shoot some clear coat over the powdercoat to give them extra depth.

Can the Mukilteo shop remove the tires, or do they need to be removed beforehand?

Just got mail back from Mukilteo place. They say it's $45 each for powdercoating.

Wow! Can't beat that price. I may have to get my "winter" set done up sometime. What color are you going with Mark?

Hello All,

Just dropped my wheels off this morning at Power Coating, Inc. in Mukilteo.  They are a good shop and they do good work.

Powder Coating Inc - www.powdercoatinginc.com
11324 Mukilteo Speedway # 7, Mukilteo - (425) 743-4393

For 17 x 7 aluminum wheels, their basic price is $40 per wheel.
They have a large selection of colors and finishes.

One important caveat:  the price is for powder coating only and does not include wheel prepartion.  Wheel prep is basically taking the wheel down to clean bare metal.  You can do it beforehand or have them do both the prep and powdercoat.

They have a metal blasting shop they work with on a regular basis, so it can be a one stop deal, if you choose.  The blaster goes by an hourly rate of $90 and you should expect that it will take about 3/4 to clean up the baked enamel finish on the stock S Lite wheels.

I'll post pics of the wheels when I pick them up.

If we can get a group buy going, count me in.  Black S-Lites would look good.

I'm thinking a dark gray, not all the way black. What do you all think?

We might be interested in a group buy also.  Does anyone know what the process is to prepare them ourselves before powder coating?  We're on the east side of the mountains so we'd have to work out getting over there to have them.

Re: preparing your wheels, the wheels need to be cleaned down to bare metal, without any residual oils or stains. Best way to do this according to the folks at Powder Coatings, Inc. is sand or media blasting.   They also estimated that it would take about 30 to 45 mins per wheel due to the baked enamel finish.
Hope this helps.

Hello All,

Just got my wheels back from Powder Coatings, Inc. and they look great!
First pic is how they were delivered, with a fabric "bootie" protecting the front side of the wheel.

BTW, the back of the wheels look just as good as the front of the wheels

And the question you're all wondering: how much and how long dies it take?

$40 per wheel for the powder coat and about $40 per wheel for prep. In this case, they used a media blast and degreaser for the preparation. The overall effect is an excellent, very durable finish. their current turn around is about one week. Powder Coatings, Inc. is located on the Mukilteo Speedway just south of Paine field.

Looks like they coated the seats for the lug bolts or nuts.  If yes, you might ask them if you need to do anything before mounting the wheels.  I would hate to see the finish marred by chipping or cracking powdercoat when you torque down the fasteners.  Let me know if they say not to worry.  Just want to know...

Pat:  Will check with the shop re: question on chipping lug nut seats and post reply

John:  BMW pads long gone along with their "cloud of dust" stopping sensation.  Currently running Ferodo 2500's fore and aft and am very pleased with thier overall performance, including dusting.

I know running snow white wheels implies that must really like cleaning wheels, but the car looks great with the white wheels.  So, there you go.

Re: chipping the powder coat at the lug nut shoulder

John at Powder Coatings said all should be fine with monting wheels; mount and torque the wheels using a torque wrench to the usual settings.

he did recommend that we should avoid using an impact wrench to mount, a good idea anyway.   Will advise all if my experience is different.

That's the route I went with my Kosei rims I had coated and had no issues.
