Posted By: Wildfamily
Subject: Detriot Tuned Tensioner Stop
Date Posted: May/15/08 at 6:18am
I've contacted Alta and have arranged for us to get a group buy on the Detroit Tuned Tensioner Stop. Their normal price is $19.99 plus $8.25/each shipping however they have offerred to sell as a group buy for $19.00 and only $8.25 shipping total for an order of 10+. They don't make much on the part, but have still offerred the $1 discount. The big savings is on the shipping since it will only be $8.25 for the entire order rather than $8.25 for each if you orderred on your own. If you don't have this you should. See part and description at the following link: http://www.altaminiperformance.com/products/show/432/Detroit-Tuned-Tensioner-Stop - http://www.altaminiperformance.com/products/show/432/Detroit-Tuned-Tensioner-Stop

I'm getting 2 and MiniCharley is in for 1. Anybody else? Let me know.

I need to know more about the tensioner before I decide to buy one.  I suppose there will be someone to talk to at the Haulin’ Ash Wine Tour this weekend?  I guess it would be a good idea to install this the same time I change my belt (if I end up going that route)?  Is a tensioner stop really necessary if the belt is replaced periodically?  I've never had a belt break on me yet...

I’ve read mixed reviews on whether I should change out my stock belt or not with a shorter belt since I now have the 15% pulley.  I'm not sure if I wanted to try to tackle this on my own.  Confused I really don’t need to have parts laying around if I’m not capable or confident of doing the work myself.  How much would it cost to pay someone for the installation(s)?  Hope to talk more about this on Saturday...

Thanks for the heads-up on the group buy,
Brenda

Maybe we could do a "Belt Changing / Tensioner Stop Cable" install party somewhere - if we could set it up like an assembly line it would go fairly quickly and we coud get a lot of cars done.  Thoughts?

I'll buy it if I can manage to install it myself...  Oh geez, go ahead and order one.  I guess I'll manage somehow. Confused  I suppose it can't be too much worse than installing a rear sway bar (although I did have Pat/onramp's guidance and tools)?

Anybody else want in on this group buy. Pretty cheap insurance against damage from belt failure. By my count I have 10 confirmed orders (minimum needed to get the group rate). Let me know if any others want to be included before I call in the order Tuesday AM. Any changes to the current order list let me know today. Thanks!

Love the idea of an install party.  That'll give me a chance to get a new shorter belt, too, since I'm running stock length, plus stretch at this point, I'm sure.  :)

Hi everyone. Just wanted to let you know the tensioner stops arrived on my porch today. I can bring them by the Northend Coffee meet on Saturday AM on my way down to Spanaway for a 10:30AM appt. If any southenders want to meet for pick up while I'm down there I can arrange that too. PM me with what you want too do. I can also bring them along on the MT Ranier run for anybody else missing out this weekend. Price comes to $20.15 each ($19/each plus $15 shipping split 13 ways or $1.15/each = $20.15)

No problem Shane. Just a note to future installers. It's not necessary to detension the belt before installing. There is plenty of slack in the cable if you have at least one hole showing. Also, when you install, unbolt the rear bolt on the pneumatic tensioner strut first and bolt on the cable...hand tighten, then unbolt the front one, bolt on cable and tighten. Makes it easier to install so you don't have to hold everything in place in a tight spot. And no worries..there is not spring action on the strut you are unbolting. If it extends a bit you can just push it back to line up the bolt holes and you are good to go.

I’m kinda wondering if we’re gonna be meeting at Paradise considering the weather.  It doesn’t bother me none to drive in it (although I'd rather have sunny weather Cool), but I think quite a few will be spooked away cuz of snow possibilities.  Do you want me to mail you a check?

Morning Brenda,

Do the belt and tensioner at the same time, since you have to take off the tire and liner to access both.  At a leisurely pace allow yourself an hour, although it should take less.  This was the first time I had MINI up on blocks, and being curious I just laid on the floor and looked around at a few other parts I have to install.  Someone here has the tensioner release tool which you could borrow instead of trying to figure out a suitable "homemade" lever like I did.  I have no doubts you can do this.  Like another hand ... no problem, just holler.  Good excuse to bring my sweetie south for a walk in the woods.

CT - Who's got the tool?  I could also meet you up somewhere North after work sometime...  I have Tuesday and Thursday next week open.  Yes, I need to go buy the belt.  I've heard lots of debating on which belt to buy though.  I'll PM you with my cell #.

Thanks,
Brenda

Eric, Pat, and Ina...I gave Jack your DT tensioners. He will bring them down to the Winged Victory Rally for you if you are gonna be there (we will be out of town). You can just give payment to Jack and I'll hook up with him later (Pat..you are all paid up).

Thanks Martin for the heads up on the correct belt,

I'll go buy the belt this week and hopefully get it installed along with the tensioner before the Wings of Victory Rally on June 29.  Hopefully I'll manage fine without too much difficulty...

So, I called NAPA today to see if they had the NAPA 535 belt in stock, and I was informed it was for a PT Cruiser not a MCS.  I tried to explain to him that I have a smaller pulley than the factory, and he made it sound as if I didn't know anything (because I'm a female? Angry) and didn't recommend the belt for my car.  What an idiot!

Anyway, I guess I'll end up going to another NAPA store after I get off work Thursday morning.  Maybe I shouldn't tell them the make and model of my car next time?

You were probably being your normal self ... sweet and considerate.  Smile  I suppose it's OK to try that again at a different store, but if you get static, just ask for the @%#^ing belt by part number like you mean it.

I tried to bet the kid in Autozone that he wouldn't find my car (JCW's are not listed in any parts catalog I've seen so far).  He refused, and then seconds later decided to listen to exactly what I was asking for.  The other salesman knew better, but decided to let the kid learn a lesson.

You can also tell them that "unless you want a couple hundred angry MINI owners having a sit-in at your store, please get me the belt I asked for and skip the lecture."

Heck with the couple hundred angry Mini owners - as much as you work out, grab him by the collar and tell him to "just get the dang belt I asked for"...  I know I wouldn't hesitate...

I guess I should re-clarify that I called them on the phone first to make sure they had it in stock before I drove there to buy it.  I certainly wasn't in the mood to debate the guy on the phone about it.  Guess I'll call another NAPA store prior to driving there unless you think they'd have it in stockQuestion
