I'd like to propose a MINI Rallye through the Cascade foothills starting in Auburn and ending in Everett. I've been scouting out backroads since last summer, but the WA DOT closed a couple of the roads I had planned to use last year. Anyway, the roads are open again but this summer's event calendar is pretty full. So what I'd like to suggest is to combine the rally with the Silver Lake picnic. Two events for the price of one!
The rally would be a cross between a scavenger hunt and a gimmick rally, similar to Winged Victory or the Tulip Rallye. The route will be divided into multiple legs with a short list of specific objects to look for along the route. However, instead of answering questions, you only have to list the objects you saw in the order they appear on the route. Points would be awarded for each object found and listed in the correct order.
I'm still tweaking the route, but it is approximately 85 miles and will take about 3.5 hours to finish. A couple of pit stops are planned along the route to stretch your legs. At the end of the rally you can turn in your route instructions and answers and then enjoy the picnic at Silver Lake. Winners will be announced at the picnic after everyone clocks in.
The rally would be done in conjunction with the Silver Lake Picnic already planned for August 2nd. Details here:
http://www.psmini.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5665 - http://www.psmini.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5665
The picnic is already planned and a go, regardless of the rally, but I thought it would be good to squeeze in this run before the picnic as a way to make the drive up to Silver Lake more fun.
I understand that this is somewhat late notice. If we can get a dozen or so cars signed-up in the next two weeks, then great. If not, then I'll plan the rally for another date, probably next summer.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a starting point in or near Auburn, with easy access to Hwy 18?

Depends. Do you want to make use of 58th Pl S, right in the area of Ellingson Rd and W Valley Rd (so you can look it up on your favorite mapping site of choice)? Might make sense to start at the Supermall and go from there.

If the rally is a go then you can count us in! Sounds fun.

I like the way you think! 58th Pl S. is a great road! I hadn't thought of it, but maybe I'll add it to the route.
I like the SuperMall idea too. It's easy to find and access, and plenty of parking. I'll check out the SuperMall area and see what will be open on a Sunday morning. Preferably, I would like us to have easy access to coffee, restrooms and gas, but it shouldn't be hard to find all those near a mall.
Thanks Phydeaux for the great suggestions!

Have a look at the bolded roads:
Lowell Larimer Road up to Everett Connect these two roads using Broadway Ave High Bridge Road (don’t miss Elliot Road up the hill to Cathcart Connect these two roads using Hwy 203, NE Carnation Farm Road, and NE 100th St) W Snoqualmie River Road NE Connect these two roads using 308th Ave SE (crosses Hwy 202) SE Issaquah Fall City Road Starting in Issaquah and working your way north.
And as a possible side trip on the way up, what about this stretch – it’s a bit over a mile in length:

I can't remember specifically if there is coffee near the southern edge of the mall. I would be surprised if there wasn't, but you never know. Another meeting point in Auburn that MIGHT work would be the Top Foods, up near N 15th and Auburn Way. The way point used in the last two Bahama Breeze -> XXX runs. That may be somewhat problematic, what with multiple stoplights, but then, if we are running rally style, there's no need to keep the group together, right? And a quick jaunt west on 15th to W Valley set you up nicely for 58th Pl. ;)

Carmen:
Thanks for the road suggestions. Those are all great roads and I already have most of them on the route, plus a few hidden gems, but I don't want to give away too much of the rally route and spoil the competition.
East Mercer Way looks awesome. I'll definitely have to check it out the next time I'm up in those parts.
Do you think you'll make it for the rallye and/or picnic?
Thanks,
Roy

UPDATE:
The driving directions are now complete and the objects/clues selected. I just need to do some document preparation and we should be good to go. My wife (Beth) will be testing the drive for us next weekend to make sure the directions are correct.
We're going to start from the SuperMall. I think that will be easy for everyone to find and to get in and out of. Also, there is a Starbuck's and Seattle's Best coffee close by.

| Sounds like a fun time will be had by all, but unfortunately it's also too much like going to work on a weekend.
I use all these roads between Issaquah and Everett on a regular basis, and even commuted along Highbridge twice a day for over 7 years.
For those that haven't experienced this particular segment (Highbridge) - it's like being able to autocross twice a day, 221 days every year. What a blast.
Anyway, Margaret has already planned out my weekend - cleaning the windows inside and out.
Enjoy the sunshine and water!

Everyone should try to arrive by 8:30am. We will have a driver's meeting at 8:40, and then first car out shortly after that. The route should take roughly 3.5 hours to complete, getting you to the picnic at lunch time.
Unfortunately, it's all largely theortical at this point since we don't have nearly enough people interested with just a week left.

P.S. - Oops, posted this using the wrong user account. My wife and I both have user accounts (two MINIs) and it's easy to forget which account is currently logged in.

Unfortunately I will miss this on the 2nd 'cause I get to fly to somewhere for (fortunately) work...
If you can shift it to either the 22nd or 29th, I'll be there

We'll miss you John. Unfortunately, we can't shift it since we had to reserve and pay for the park location at the beginning of the year in order to ensure availability. Have a good trip and sorry you can't joing us! Work does get in the way of so many things, but these days, that's a good thing.

I knew the picnic date was in-stone...
I meant the Rallye, since that still seems up in the air.

Beth and Roy,
Thank you for putting this rally together. Unfortunately, it's the same day as our family reunion. It's much more fun to run a rally than to plan one and hope everyone doesn't get too lost. Hope everything goes great for you.

Okay, I'm sorry to say that we don't have enough cars to proceed with the proposed rally up to Everett.
However, the picnic at Silver Lake is still on and it looks like the weather will be beautiful! So, if you haven't already, please be sure to sign-up for the picnic. See this thread:
http://www.psmini.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5665 - http://www.psmini.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5665
I will reschedule this rally for next summer. I think this summer is already pretty booked, and August will be a busy month for me at work. Sorry it can't be sooner.
I am interested in people's feedback about the finishing location for the rally. Would people prefer ending with a picnic, or at a restaurant or casino? It seems like restaurants don't work well because people trickle in at different times and there's lots of waiting. What are your thoughts?

The best kind of end location is one where there's a place for folks to gather, eat, drink and be merry. I like the idea of a picnic setting like you'd planned for this year. It's something different from the ending locations of the rallys we've been to so far.
