Well, I should have been gearing up to head to the greater northwest by now but unfortunately it's been delayed a year.  Voluntarily...  But that's one of those 'career' decisions I just had to make.  Basically staying on Guam another year gets me:

1.  Another solid eval.  Once you transfer, you have to compete with people already established as Navy evals are based on the 'curve', and evals are a large part of promotability.

2.  Housing market dropped a bit out here because the price of gas shot up and the Marines aren't arriving yet as planned.  Another year will give me more equity and hopefully more property value.

3.  Kids are both still in diapers (oldest is 2 and a half).  Another 18 months and they should both be out of them, which will make travelling a lot easier.  It will also put one of them at the age for pre-school...  I think it will be nice to settle down in a new place with school already planned, versus waiting a year and then having to change the routine to accomodate.

4.  Received a 'desk promotion' because I volunteered to stay another year.  Thus they had me replace a Senior Chief as Ship Superintendent for my own Los Angeles class fast attack submarine.  Longer hours, more responsibility, more authority, more visibility, more Senior Officer interaction...  More promotability.

5.  Orders suck right now.  Lots of people leaving Guam getting the shaft.  Some people being forced to stay, so better than I volunteered and got some benefit.

6.  30 days of free leave for volunteering.  So my normal 30 days + another 30.

Still aiming for Kitsap when I transfer, but it all depends on needs of the Navy.  Hopefully Iraq will be drawing down, Afgan will be drawing down, Marines will be arriving in Guam, and the stars align to support the Batmini in Puget Sound.   Current date looks to be around June 2011.

Sounds like a well thought out decision with lots of potential.  Good luck with your new assignment.  As with all of our service members, past and present, your contribution to the defense of our country is honored and appreciated.

We'll keep the light on for ya!

He's talking Kitsap penninsula, Bangor sub base at first guess.  Left half of the state, John.  :)

wagnbat!

There are plenty of places to live in Kitsap County that are very nice and as you grow older and possibly retire here there are plenty of medical facilities here.  That is why my wife and I are here; I am retired Army (at least my Dad was retired Navy)Smile  I wonder if you could commute across the Hood Canal on a small boat to get to Bangor??

I wish there was a local MINI Dealership, like our Honda, Subaru, Mazada and VW.
