Hi everyone. This is not an online deal but a deal at your local Costco. The 6 quart cartons of Mobile 1 Synthetic 5w30 are on sale for $9.99 off regular price. Sale period: Feb 3-27. Limit 3 per customer. You need a coupon, which should have been mailed to you, or I think you can beg, borrow or otherwise find one at the Costco. I think the regular price is around $35 so this is a really big discount. Did they start caring the European blend? Autozone over here has it for 8 bucks a qt. everyday price so that is about a 14 dollar savings compared to the parts store.

When E-15 (ethanol) hits us it will all be pretty interesting. What oil is "Required" as opposed to what will work just fine will become the topic. S. ------------- I wish there was a local MINI Dealership, like our Honda, Subaru, Mazada and VW. |

Our manual does not specifically say European but it does say: MINI Recommends

I have a sticker on my IC cover that says "MINI recommends Castrol Syntec 5w-30" so that's what I run, and I saw that on the list, so I should be good.?

Kurt: The standard 5W-30W is not rated the same it as the 0W-40W which is rated for turbo and supercharged engines. S: Just a computer with a bunch of stuff on it. Jason: That is what the Dealership has it is a different oil then the standard 5W-30W Castrol The thing here is the reason for the rating is because of break down and cold weather start up. If you are changing your oil every 3k to 5k and after you go to the track you most likely will never have a break down problem. But if you are running out there to 10k to15k you are asking for premature wear. The other thing to look at the next time you do your oil change is how much gas is diluted in the oil. Because of our boosted intake pressures you get greater blow by causing fuel/vapors to get trapped in the oil. The oil blends that are made for supercharged engines that this into account and are rated different. John ------------- If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough. |

If you want to stay with Castrol, the 0W-30W European formula that can be picked up at Autozone is basically the same thing that the dealer uses. If you want to use Mobil 1 then 0W-40W, but keep in mind you can use what every you want. The problem is how things are sold in the US it is a game, in Europe you have very few choices from the oil companies. ------------- If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough. |

I've never even seen the Euro formula, and don't have an Autozone really close to me. Have O'Reilly instead. I am planning on changing my oil every 5000miles anyway, since I drive the car pretty hard. So I should be OK hopefully (I have another two changes worth of the stuff, which I bought when it was last on sale...) Up until the last change, I used the Costco Mobile1 and have always changed the oil and filter and rotate tires every 5000 on the even odometer number. Makes it real easy to manage. For the last change I used the Euro formula. Have noticed no difference so far except a minor pan leak seems to have stopped or slowed down some for sure. I had heard a rumor about this effect somewhere but don't recall where. I got it at O'Rielly's. Haven't seen it there since. Pretty sure they have it at Action. I will probably keep on the Mobile1 for Jessmini's 03S and my other vehicles. My opinion is with the modern oils today the 3mo/3000miles rule is out the window....UNLESS you are driving in extreme conditions like lots of dust, extreme cold, extreme hot etc. Most operator manuals for most us autos have an A & B maintenance schedule.. A being the 3mo/3000 month and the B being 7500 mile oil change. The dealer will never tell you about the 7500 mile schedule. They make their money on maintenance. A 5000 mile schedule would not be an issue IMO. While at Ft. Okay I just finished doing another oil change and when I ran down to pick up more RP I looked at both Castrol and Mobil1. Autozone here does not keep the European blend with the other oils but both oils were 7.99 a qt.
