Well, I found some brakes off of an 09 JCW factory car. The guy upgraded to the big brake kit at the dealer and these were taken off before delivery so they are new... Fronts only. I got them for a pretty good deal. They are being shipped and I should see them next week. Now I have to sort out brake lines and I should have a fairly cheap set of incognito JCW brakes for a R53...
unless I powdercoat them red and slap on a JCW sticker, then they wont be so incognito anymore...
Has anybody else made the swap yet?

That should be a nice setup. There is a huge difference between my wife's R55 brakes and those on my R53. Much more stopping power in my opinion.

FYI : You need the R56 brake lines to do this up grade. Ask John (GoKart) AKA Bear Bait he has done this mod.

Considering I paid $200 for mine, I dont think I did too poorly... I also plan on upgrading the rotors/pads and lines on the rears as well, so I need to get R56 lines up front and R53 lines in the rear.
I am thinking of getting them powdercoated before putting them on though...

Bear Bait here...
Yes, I did this upgrade in August and it's worth it. As John said, you're gonna need the R56 front brake lines. I went with Detroit Tuned's SS lines and they were a very easy install. http://www.detroittuned.com/shop/?productID=131 You want the DT8 and they're on sale for $50. I also recommend the Power Bleeder and catch--well worth the $ An example: http://www.mini-madness.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=178 http://www.mini-madness.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=258 If you're interested in some assistance, come down to Olympia--I have tools, bleeders, a garage, and a couple under my belt. PS Don't spend the $ on powdercoating unless you're rolling in it. Check out DT's caliper paint instead. I also forgot to mention the Super Blue Brake Fluid. Only $12.95.

Right now DT has them on sale this week http://www.detroittuned.com/shop/
Not highjacking but I think it is only fair to link John's Great Story off the road. http://www.psmini.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4249 John |

What ever happened with this? Did you do the brakes or are you still reading about my road trip?
Did anyone see the THREE photos (one in each of the stories about MTTS, MMMT, and LeMay) of GoKart in the latest issue of MC2? |

I have the brakes, but I still need to pick up the lines before I do the install. I am also still contemplating doing new rotors and pads on the back at the same time, or just the fronts for the time being... For now, the are nicely sitting in a box in the living room. (I am sure the wife loves it!!!)
I am in one of the pictures in the LeMay photos, the one of the food area, I am towards the back, blue checkered shirt on... |

Keep in mind that 80-85% of every day braking occurs in the front. Unless you're doing some serious track days, IMHO you're set once you get the brake lines. I think I've already mentioned that stainless steel is the way to go.
Let me know if you want some help. You'd still do most of the work so you'll learn... and you won't have to buy all the tools. |
