Topic: Used Exhaust Posted: November/01/04 at 1:52am |
What are the downsides to buying a used exhaust? Rust is an obvious one, but I would think that a reputable dealer selling a demoed exhaust would not sell something rusty.
Is there anything else to consider when buying used?

My concern would be what you can not see. The inside of the system. What is the rust level on the inside due to condensation? What if it is blown out? Was the system sealed when taken off?

Those are some good things that I wouldn't have considered.
I don't generally like to buy used, but exhaust systems seem to be insanely priced considering they are mostly stainless steel piping that has been bent correctly. Maybe the engineering behind exhaust systems is much greater than I realize. However, considering the over engineering that has gone into many of the air intakes, I wouldn't doubt that most of the price goes to pay for the R&D.

How much can you trust the seller? I ordered my JCW right from the beginning, but there was a hangup at the dealer and I got to drive the standard S for the weekend before she went back in for the overhaul. When I was picking up and paying up they asked if I wanted the exhaust and charger as they were actually mine. But under the circumstances I didn't have the transportation or the space to store them, etc. To cut to the chase the dealer kept them for "disposal" which tells me someone had them to use or sell. In that case there was a system with 600 miles and 3 days use on it. If you can trust the seller when they tell you something like that you may have a good deal without much worry.

I pulled my stock exhaust off and it looked pretty good with 30000 miles and 20 months on it. No dings, no rust. It's sitting in my garage. I don't know who would want it unless they had been in an accident and needed a stock replacement.

I had my resonater removed and went directly to the muffler. It flows lots better and was under 75.00. It sounds throatier but not to loud. For the little HP gain with an exhaust gives, I could not justify 700.00 plus dollars. Gained a couple of HP and lost 25lbs(thats what the resonater weighs) FYI

Is that the "one ball" exhaust mod? I was thinking that that might be a good way to go, but I would really rather lose 25lbs off the nose .

I have some exhaust garage art too.
I bought my Magnaflow on E Bay for about $550 no tax or shipping.

Yes it is the left nut exhaust mod.
If you want to loose 25lb off the nose. Those S-lites are not lite at all, they are the heaviest rim made for the mini 26lbs each and of course the run flats 20lbs ea. You can get rims as lite as 13lbs and shave 2 to 5lbs on tires. That would be the only way I can see to lightn up the nose.

yeah, I know I need to lose the rims at some point. My MINI is plenty fast though so unless I start to drag or do any auto-x I won't worry about it too much. Where did you get your exhaust castrated?

I got it done at kitsap muffler in Gorst between Bremerton and Port Orchard. They did it for 40.00. In the seattle area it would be more like 75.00. We live on the penninsula.

Hey Mike, I've seen that muffler shop many times, driving by. Did they use mandrel bent piping to do the one-ball???
You've sparked my interest!

I will repost here as I sold my old Remus System off my Cooper. I provided the new owner with complete details of when it was install and the system was clean. I got half of retail for it when I sold it. So I guess I am glad someone wanted a used system.

Well let me say this you get what you pay for. The guy doing it cut it short. Then fought the short bend to match it. If he would have cut it back another 12" it would have come out cleaner. If I was paying top dollar I would have made them redo it.
